Wanyjok Micro-grid Project
SunGate Solar, in partnership with one of the leading micro-grid developers in Africa – PowerGen Renewable Energy, has commenced the construction of a 55 kWp micro-grid system to power market area in Wanyjok, South Sudan. Wanyjok is located in Aweil East County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state. Currently, businesses and organizations in Wanyjok depend on unreliable and costly diesel generators for electricity.
The Wanyjok micro-grid pilot project is an initiative by SunGate to electrify South Sudan for economic growth. The plan is for the pilot project to be commissioned in September 2022. If successful, the project will be followed on with expansion in Wanyjok and into many other towns and cities in the country.
In partnership with Village Help for South Sudan (VHSS), the project also integrates Electric Cooking research – where selected households and restaurants will be provided Electric Pressure Cookers, which are highly efficient cookstoves. The combination of the Micro-grid and Electric Cooking pilots will provide field data needed for scaling up integrated energy access in South Sudan.
